ASTM D6080 - Standard Practice for Defining the Viscosity Characteristics of Hydraulic Fluids

 

We perform quality and conformance testing on a range of hydraulic fluids; ASTM D6080 describes the viscosity characteristics of different hydraulic fluids. This standard practice defines a nomenclature for describing the low- and high-temperature viscosity characteristics of hydraulic fluids.   A hydraulic fluid can be described as ISO VG xx Lyy/zz (VI), where xx = the ISO viscosity grade defined by ASTM D2422.  “Lyy” defines the lowest temperature at which the fluid has a minimum viscosity of 750 mpa*s.  “zz” identifies the high-temperature viscosity grade, defined as the viscosity at 40c of a fluid which has been sheared in accordance with ASTM D5621 - Shear Stability of Hydraulic Fluids.  “VI” is the viscosity index of the fluid which has been sheared per ASTM D5621 as defined in ASTM D2270 - Viscosity Index.
