ASTM D4176 - Free Water and Particulate Contamination in Distillate Fuels (Appearance) (Visual Inspection Procedures)

We perform testing by ASTM D4176 to detect free water and particulate contamination in gasoline, diesel, ethanol, jet and biodiesel by visual inspection. Many fuel specifications require that fuel be clear and bright and free of visible particulate matter. An experienced tester can detect as little as 40 ppm of free water in the fuel by visual inspection. Visible contamination such as sediment or turbidity normally indicates major contamination. ASTM D4176 outlines two procedures for estimating the presence of suspended free water and solid particulate contamination in ethanol, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, and biodiesel.

Alcor Petrolab also performs sediment testing by ASTM D2273ASTM D2709, ASTM D473, and ASTM D1796. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
