IP 41 - Cetane Number
We perform diesel quality testing by IP 41 to determine the cetane rating of diesel fuel oil using a specialized cetane engine. The cetane number provides a measure of the ignition characteristics of diesel fuel oil in compression ignition engines. This test method is used by engine manufacturers, petroleum refiners and marketers, and in commerce as a primary specification measurement related to matching appropriate fuels with engines. Cetane number requirements depend on engine design, size, nature of speed and load variations, and on starting and atmospheric conditions. IP 41 uses a standard single cylinder, four-stroke cycle, variable compression ratio, indirect injected diesel engine known as a cetane engine.
We also perform cetane testing by ASTM D4737, ASTM D613, ASTM D976, and ISO 5165. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
