IP 71 - Kinematic Viscosity and Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity

We perform testing by IP 71 to determine the kinematic viscosity by measuring the time for a petroleum liquid to flow under gravity through a viscometer. Many petroleum products are used as lubricants, and many types of equipment depend on using a lubricant with appropriate viscosity. Knowing a product's viscosity is also important in estimating the optimum storage, handling, and operational conditions of many petroleum fuels. For these reasons, accurately determining viscosity is essential to many product specifications.

We also perform viscosity testing by ASTM D1092ASTM D2161ASTM D2270ASTM D2422ASTM D2532ASTM D2983ASTM D341ASTM D445IP 226ISO 2909, and ISO 3104. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.
