IP 236 - Motor Octane Number

We perform gasoline quality testing by IP 236 to find the motor octane number; this is combined with IP 237 to determine the antiknock index of gasoline. Motor Octane Number correlates with commercial automotive spark-ignition engine antiknock performance under severe conditions of operation. Motor Octane Number, in conjunction with IP 237 - Research Octane Number, defines the antiknock index of automotive spark-ignition engine fuels, in accordance with Specification ASTM D4814. The antiknock index of a fuel approximates the road octane ratings for many vehicles, is posted on retail dispensing pumps in the United States, and is referred to in vehicle manuals.
