ASTM D6423 - Determination of pHe of Ethanol, Denatured Fuel Ethanol, and Fuel Ethanol


We perform testing by ASTM D6423 to measure the acid strength or pH of high ethanol content fuels. The acid strength, as measured by pHe, is a good predictor of the corrosion potential of ethanol fuels. When fuel ethanol used in automotive spark-ignition engines has pHe below 6.5, fuel pumps can malfunction as a result of film forming between the brushes and commutator, fuel injectors can fail from corrosive wear, and excessive engine cylinder wear can occur. When the pHe is above 9.0, fuel pump plastic parts can fail.
