ASTM D1403 - Quarter & Half Cone Penetration of Grease

 

We perform grease quality testing by ASTM D1403 to measure the consistency of lubricating grease using a smaller cone penetration apparatus. ASTM D1403 is used when the sample is too small to use ASTM D217. This test uses a ¼-scale cone or a 1/2-scale cone to measure the penetration of worked and unworked grease samples. The reduced-scale penetration values are converted to full-scale penetration values. These results can be used to establish the NLGI consistency of the grease or to evaluate the effect of storage conditions on grease consistency.
