ASTM D1404 - Deleterious Particles in Lubricating Grease
We perform grease testing by ASTM D1404 to estimate the amount of deleterious particles in lubricating grease. Particle contamination can effect a grease's performance as a lubricant. A small amount of grease is placed between two clean, highly polished plastic plates, which are then rotated against each other at high pressure. Any particles in the grease that are harder than the plastic will leave arc-shaped scratches in the plates. The number of solid particles can be estimated by counting the total number of scratches at the end of the test. This test may also be referred to as a particulate contamination test.
