ASTM D3386 – Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion of Electrical Insulating Materials

We test electrical insulating materials by ASTM D3386 to determine the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, using a thermomechanical analyzer. ASTM D3386 measures the change of dimension as a function of temperature of a small sample of a solid electrical insulating material. The linear thermal expansion coefficient is calculated from these measurements. This information is useful for evaluating solid insulating materials for use in combination with other materials where differences in coefficients may cause mechanical stresses.
