APL 012 - GC/MS Analysis
We perform GC (gas chromatography) testing to analyze gasoline, diesel, and other fuel samples at a molecular level. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis combines gas-liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a sample. A GC/MS analyzes a sample by heating the sample and passing it through a capillary column (a column of very fine metal tubing; the metal tubing is shaped in a spiral, similar to a compressed spring, that makes the column). During this process the sample breaks down into its separate molecules, which come off the column at different times. The GC/MS measures the molecules as they come off the column and identifies them by how long it took the molecule to travel all the way through the column.
GC/MS analysis is specific and detailed, and can give the entire molecular make up of most samples.
